Aim : The aim of this Department is to produce basic doctors who can effectively deliver comprehensive health care to the community.
Functions of the Department :
To train students :
- In effective delivery of preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative health care to the community.
- To serve the community through Primary Health Centers and Subcentres and also to give training to medical students in rural health.
- To provide immunization services to the public by establishment of preventive clinics.
- To manage and control communicable and non communicable diseases.
- Investigation and control of out break of diseases.
- Impart Health Education in all aspects of life. ( Personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, nutrition, geriatrics, occupational health etc. )
- Provide premarital counseling, genetic counseling, family welfare advice etc. to the community.
- Conduct survey-cum-research activities in the field, to plan out measures for the improvement of health of the community.
- Provide School Health Services for the early detection of childhood problems and take appropriate measures.
- Organise medical camps for the early detection of diseases and refer them for expert management.
- In case of natural calamities, give advice for proper relief measures.
- To suggest measures for the improvement of mental health of the community to prevent suicides, alcoholism, drug addiction smoking, etc.
In short, measures to improve the total health status of the community in all stages of human life with “ Total health care from womb to tomb. “
At present the Department is having teaching and training programmes for hundred ( 100 ) MBBS students, 104 – IIIrd semester students and 57 – IVth semester students. There are urban and rural health centres under the control of this department. The Lecturer-Cum-Statistician of the Department is looking after the Central Statistical Unit of the institution.
One Assistant Professor is the Programme Officer of the NSS Unit of this College.

Facilities
The Department is having extension service facilities through Rural and Urban community health centres providing Primary Health Centre to the surrounding people / population.
The Department has established on excellent museum for the benefit of medial, paramedical and other students and also the general public.
