Cardiology Department

The Cardiology Department of PHI has all the facilities needed for a most advanced tertiary care cardiac centre.

• Cardiac Catheterization Unit- The cardiac catheterization unit of PHI is equipped with Axiom Artis unit manufactured by M/s Siemens of Germany incorporating flat panel digital acquisition technology for acquiring the images with high level of accuracy and clarity. This is the latest technology available any where in the world. All types of invasive investigations like right and left heart catheterization and angiograms like left and right ventricular angiograms and coronary, carotid, renal and peripheral arteriograms and aortogram and interventional procedures like coronary, carotid and renal angioplasties, various valvuloplasties, device closure of various defects, embolization of vascular anomalies and pacemaker implantation are done in this unit.
• Intensive Cardiac Care units. The PHI has three Intensive Cardiac Care Units.
• Main Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) This is a 10 bed unit where acutely ill cardiac patients are admitted for close observation of various haemodynamic and other vital parameters. This unit is equipped with the latest monitors from M/s Philips of Holland. In addition, this unit has equipments like ventilators, oxymeters, blood pressure monitors and Intra Aortic Balloon Pump to monitor, detect and treat any acute cardiac problem. This unit has two nursing stations.
  • Main nursing station from where all treatments are carried out and
  • Central station with central monitoring facility from where observation and monitoring of each patient is carried out.
  Isolation ICCU is a unique feature of this unit, where patients with infection diseases needing cardiac monitoring can be looked after.
• Intermediate Intensive Cardiac Care Unit
  
  This also is a 10 bed facility with each bed having side monitors, which are connected to a central station. This unit is utilized to monitor improved patients shifted from main ICCU and those cardiac patients who are less acutely ill requiring less of intensive care. This unit is adjacent to main ICCU for easy shifting of patients from one unit to the other.
• Emergency Intensive Cardiac Care Unit
  
  This is a 3 bed facility attached to the emergency / casualty area of the hospital. This is meant for immediate observation and rapid stabilization of actually ill cardiac patients before they are shifted to main ICCU or catheterization laboratory or cardiac operation theatre for further management. This unit has facility for monitoring various haemodynamic parameters. All ICCU units are equipped with life saving biphasic Defibrillators from M/s Philips.
• Non Invasive Cardiac Laboratory ? The non?invasive laboratory of PHI has the following facilities-
1. Electrocardiogram
2. 2-D Echocardiogram with colour Doppler
1. Transthoracic
2. Transoesophageal
3. Stress Echocardiography
4. Tissue Velocity Imaging
3. Computerized Treadmill Stress test
4. 24 hour Holter Monitoring
All these facilities make the unit a comprehensive cardiac non ? invasive investigation setup to detect and diagnose various cardiac diseases.
• External Counter Pulsation (ECP)- This equipment is a unique feature of this institute. ECP is a treatment modality for cardiac patients who are not candidates for angioplasty or surgery or those patients who do not want these procedures. ECP has been found useful in those patients in whom the disease has advanced beyond the standard modalities of treatment.

1. Steel paneled operation theater with vertical laminar airflow


There are three operation theatres (OT) each with steel paneling and vertical laminar airflow to minimize the risk of infection. The Sans Heart- Lung machine from M/s Terumo Corporation, which is installed in our institution, is the latest and most modern equipment incorporating all safety features. This equipment provides maximum safety to patients who undergo open heart procedures under cardiopulmonary bypass. Other equipments in OT include Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) various monitors to continuously observe vital signs and the latest and most modern Datex Ohmeda anesthesia work station. All put together these facilities can match the best available any where in the world.
2. Surgical Intensive Care Units.


There are three post surgical intensive care units having total bed strength of 25 where post surgical patients can be monitored. These units are equipped with ventilators, low high suction, Arterial blood Gas Analyzer and ACT machine in addition to the standard monitoring facilities. Out of these post surgical Intensive Care Units, the main unit with 10 beds is next to the OT for easy shifting of patients and continuous observation from nurses and doctors.

Hospital bed facilities - The PHI has various categories of beds to suit the financial capacity of every patient.

1. Totally Free General Ward Beds - 10 beds are available in this ward meant for patients belonging to the low socio- economic status. All the services in this area are totally free.
2. Subsidized General Ward Beds: There are 25 subsidized general ward beds where the service charges are heavily subsidized. This area is centrally air conditioned for patient comfort. There are separate wards for male and female patients. Each ward is provided with a television for patient entertainment.
3. Semi- Private Rooms : Sharing private rooms where there are four patients in one room. Each patient area is partitioned into a cubicle with curtains for individual privacy.
4. Deluxe Rooms Single rooms meant for patients who want privacy and comfort and can afford. Each room has a separate bystander couch, television and telephone.
5. Super ? Deluxe Rooms : Single rooms with all facilities of deluxe rooms with additional refrigerator and more spacious rooms.
6. VIP Room: Meant for the Very Important Person. This room is divided into two areas - a patient area and bystanders sitting area. There is only one room of this type.
